The sense of smell is “closely linked with memory, probably more so than any of our other senses” [fifthsense.org]. I’ve definitely noticed this over the years which is why when my interior design firm works on projects for clients, one thing we often do free of charge is incorporate some scent for the reveal. That is an exceedingly powerful touch and with the right scent, will have a highly positive impact on our clients. I do the same in our home and vehicle; that is am thoughtful about incorporating the right scent throughout.
One of the best ways to control the scent in each room or a single room is by using a high-quality diffuser. A good diffuser brand offers a broad selection of fragrances to choose from making this entire exercise so easy.
The question is then, what are the best scents for each room? I answer that below room by room. Please note that this is highly subjective and is my opinion only. That said, I hope it offers some guidelines if you decide to incorporate scent in your home.
1. Living Room: Inviting and Warm Scent
The living room is a shared space where inviting and warm scents set the tone for comfort. Santal Vanilla by Studio McGee, Sandalwood by the Met, and Citrus by Pura are ideal choices for creating a welcoming atmosphere. Use high-quality candles or diffusers that steadily release subtle fragrances without overpowering the room. Place the scent source in a central location for even distribution throughout the space. Ensure the fragrance complements the roomโs decor and doesnโt clash with other smells in the home.
2. Bedroom: Relaxing and Calming Scent
The bedroom should promote relaxation and calm through carefully chosen scents. Lavender by Thymes, Chamomile by NEST New York, and Eucalyptus by Thymes are excellent for creating a soothing and restful environment. Use essential oil diffusers or linen sprays to introduce subtle, calming aromas without overwhelming the space. Position the diffuser near the bed to maximize its effect during sleep. Refresh the scent regularly to maintain a consistent and tranquil atmosphere.
3. Kitchen: Fresh and Neutral
The kitchen benefits from fresh and neutral scents that complement its purpose as a cooking space. Lemon by Pura, Basil by Thymes, and Mint by Allos are excellent choices for neutralizing odors while keeping the atmosphere clean and inviting. Avoid sweet or heavy fragrances that can interfere with food aromas and flavors. Use a small diffuser or stovetop simmer pot to introduce natural, food-friendly scents. Refresh the scent regularly to keep the space smelling fresh and pleasant.
4. Bathroom: Clean and Refreshing
The bathroom requires clean and refreshing scents to maintain a fresh atmosphere. Washed Linen by Thymes, Fresh Sea Salt by ILLUME, and Eucalyptus by Thymes are ideal for evoking a sense of cleanliness and calm. Reed diffusers or air sprays work well to distribute subtle yet effective fragrance throughout the space. Place the diffuser on a countertop or shelf for consistent coverage. Replenish the scent source regularly to ensure the bathroom always smells crisp and inviting.
5. Home Office: Energizing and Focused
The home office benefits from energizing and focus-enhancing scents that support productivity. Morning Mint by Archipelgo, Citrus by Pura, and Rosemary Eucalyptus by LAFCO are excellent choices for boosting concentration and maintaining energy levels. Use a subtle diffuser or scented sachets to introduce these invigorating aromas without overwhelming the space. Place the scent source near your workspace for maximum effect while working. Refresh the scent periodically to maintain a stimulating and focused environment.
6. Dining Room: Subtle and Elegant
The dining room thrives on subtle and elegant scents that enhance the dining experience without overpowering it. Light floral fragrances like Orange Blossom, Lilac & Jasmine by Antica Farmacista or woody notes like Fresh Balsam & Cedarwood by Anthropologie are ideal for creating a refined and sophisticated ambiance. Avoid using strong or sweet aromas that could clash with the flavors of the food. Opt for a small candle or diffuser placed away from the dining table for a balanced effect. Refresh the scent occasionally to maintain its presence without becoming intrusive.
7. Entryway: Inviting and Memorable
The entryway should feature inviting and memorable scents that create a positive first impression. Bold fragrances like Amber Woods Set by Pura, Fresh Bergamot by Pura, or Pumpkin Spice & Black Walnut by Anthropologie work well to set a warm and welcoming tone. Place small candles or plug-in diffusers strategically near the door for consistent scent coverage. Ensure the fragrance complements the decor and aligns with the overall theme of the home. Refresh the scent regularly to maintain a lasting and inviting atmosphere for guests.
8. Laundry Room: Crisp and Clean
The laundry room thrives on crisp and clean scents that emphasize freshness. Coconut Calm by Becki Owens, Washed Linen by Thymes, and Lavender by Thymes are excellent choices for creating a light and airy atmosphere. Use scented sachets or dryer sheets to infuse the fragrance into both the room and freshly laundered items. Place sachets in drawers or storage areas to maintain the clean scent throughout the space. Regularly refresh the scent source to ensure the laundry room always smells fresh and inviting.
9. Garage: Neutral and Fresh
The garage benefits from neutral and fresh scents that counteract musty or chemical odors. Fresh Balsam & Cedarwood by Anthropologie, Frasier Fir by Thymes, and French Linen by Studio McGee are ideal for maintaining a clean and balanced atmosphere. Use odor-neutralizing sprays, plug-in air fresheners, or sachets to distribute the scent effectively throughout the space. Position scent sources near storage areas or corners prone to odors for maximum impact. Refresh the scent regularly to ensure the garage stays fresh without becoming overpowering.
10. TV Room: Cozy and Relaxing
The TV room thrives on cozy and relaxing scents that enhance comfort during downtime. Warm fragrances like Vanilla by Studio McGee, Cinnamon Woods by Pura, and Amber Woods Set by Pura create an inviting and tranquil atmosphere. Use candles or a low-maintenance diffuser to provide a subtle, consistent aroma throughout the space. Position the scent source away from the seating area to avoid overpowering the room. Select gentle fragrances that complement, rather than distract from, the sensory experience of watching TV.
