The term A.I. software is used too liberally in my opinion. Too many design software platforms tout their software as being “AI” but it’s not.
This article sets out your current AI interior design options. There aren’t many but that will definitely change fast.
Note that often floor plan and room creator software platforms are called AI software. They aren’t. They’re fully directed by human input. AI design software creates designs out of thin air. That’s what this list is all about.
Also, the list below is restricted to “interior design” AI software. There are AI iterations out there that focus on color scheming and furniture but they are restricted; they don’t do full interior design so I’m not including them here.
There are two types, as in they approach A.I. interior design differently.
- Design from a photo: This type requires that you upload a photo of a room. The AI then does a redesign. Some will redesign with furniture in it. Some require an empty room. Some can do both.
- Design from scratch: This type of AI interior design software functions best
Which type is better?
On the face of it designing from a photo is better but that’s not always the case. I say that because the two I set out below create unbelievably cool designs from scratch which you can control to a certain degree with prompts. This type is fantastic for coming up with initial design ideas and concepts.
The design from a photo option is good but I’ve found that the quality is lacking. A.I. is in its infancy right now so the quality isn’t great. I think it can be useful, but it’s nowhere near a finished design. You’ll see what I mean below.
My list of the current best true A.I. interior design software
1. Dream Studio (Design from Scratch)
This is a mighty impressive “design from scratch” A.I. image and design creation software. It designs more than just interiors. It can produce pretty much anything.
You can try DreamStudio for free. The paid option is actually very economical. You pay as you go; a credits system. This is great… no need to worry about forgetting you have another subscription charging your credit card every month.
DreamStudio offers some built-in prompts which I like and which is why I actually prefer it over Midjourney.
Examples:
Prompts: Industrial style living room / rustic style living room / West coast contemporary style living room (3 separate designs).
Industrial-style living rooms
Rustic-style living rooms
West Coast contemporary style living room
2. Midjourney (Design from Scratch)
Midjourney is one of, if not the first A.I. image creator to hit the scene. I’ve been a paying member for months. It’s wild. It’s incredible. While it produces any image, it does a good job spitting out interior designs. It’s entirely prompt based. The better you get at prompting, the better your results.
My beef with Midjourney is it’s on the Discord platform. It was a major pain in the neck to figure out how to get my account up and running. If you use the free version, good luck finding your images. The free version produces images in the public area so they get lost. It was supremely annoying; so much so I ponied up the monthly fee fast. Now I have my own dedicated area where my designs drop.
Example #1
Prompt: Rustic living room photorealism
Example #2
Prompt: Super cool industrial living room photorealism
3. InteriorAI.com (Scratch and Photo)
InteriorAI.com, as far as I know, was one of the first AI platforms launched specifically for interior design. I signed up instantly. It’s constantly improving.
This software has several built-in prompts for interior design specifically.
Overall, it does a decent job. It’s best for helping designers and homeowners to come up with ideas. It certainly doesn’t produce a finished job.

4. Virtualstaging.ai
Virtualstaging.ai is primarily for real estate agents to help them quickly and cheaply stage photos of real estate listings. It’s very simple. Realtors upload images of empty rooms and this software automatically inserts furniture and furnishings to make the listing images look more appealing.
Does it work?
Currently, it’s not that good but I know the owner is working on improving it. I wrote a Virtualstaging.ai review. See examples below. As you can see, it’s not quite dialed in yet.
Examples:
Prompt: No prompt needed. It’s a very simple interface.
5. Interiorflow.co (from scratch and from submitted images)
Interiorflow gets dimensions and angles spot on but the designs are out there. For the first example below, I asked for photorealistic but it’s not really photorealistic. For the second example, that’s not a design I could work with. The mural or window is odd. The round ottoman/seating thing is bizarre. Not very useful.
Example #1
- Prompt: Freestyle (no input image)
- Room: Living room
- Style: Rustic
- Creative settings: Photorealistic
Example #2
- Prompt: Submitted an image of an empty room
- Room: Living room
- Style: Rustic
6. Homedesigns.ai (Must submit a photo)
Homedesigns.ai creates interiors, exteriors and gardens. It does the best job for exteriors but generally it doesn’t do a very good job with any of it. It offers a good number of prompting options as well.
Examples:
7. REimaginehome.ai (Must
You must upload interior images with furniture. Reimaginehome.ai redesigns rooms with furniture. REimaginehome.ai can also redesign exteriors and landscaping.
Prompts: You can let the software “surprise you” or click “Advanced options” and input some additional prompts.
Example #1: I input additional prompts (farmhouse style)
As you can see the transformation isn’t very much.
Example #2: I asked it to surprise me
Example #3: Front yard
8. Planner5D (Mobile only)
Planner5D offers AI with its mobile Design Generator tool. It’s quite good. You must upload an empty OR furnished room from your phone. No prompting options. It just redesigns it for you.
Example #1: Empty living room
Original:
Prompt: No prompt option.

Example #2: Uploaded furnished room.
Original:
Prompt: no prompt option.

Which AI interior design software is best?
My current favorite for designing rooms from scratch is Dream Studio.
My current favorite that works from a submitted photo is Interior.ai.
Realistically, Dream Studio and Midjourney are by far the best. While I can’t upload my own images, they are so good for coming up with initial design ideas.
