Notes

But, what can you do? After all, most of us are not realistically going to give up on one of our favorite sweet treats. One option is to learn to make ice cream yourself. This process is surprisingly simple and does not take a whole lot of time.
In fact, in the time that it takes to get dressed and drive to the ice cream shop, you can churn up a batch of our Easiest Homemade Strawberry Ice Cream. Even better, there are no unpronounceable ingredients in our ice cream recipe. There are only five ingredients in our Strawberry Ice Cream and they are all things that you probably already have in your kitchen.
This recipe makes a lightly sweetened ice cream. Often, commercially made ice creams are syrupy sweet and you can only eat a bit of it before the sugar is just too much. However, this ice cream recipe is light, fruity, and natural tasting.
This isn’t a recipe that is going to make one of the kids sick if he over indulges. It consists of just strawberries, sugar, cream, milk and vanilla extract. No high fructose corn syrup.
No artificial colors and no artificial flavorings. This is the kind of ice cream that your great grandmother used to make.
In the 1840s, an American woman named Nancy Johnson created the first hand cranked ice cream freezer. With this nifty invention, anyone could make homemade ice creams and having ice cream parties became fashionable in the late 1800s. If you are old enough, you may have great memories of cranking ice cream outdoors in the summer months.
Layers of salt and ice are mixed in a wooden bucket which freezes the ice cream mixture. The ice cream is churned by a hand crank. The disadvantage of this style of ice cream maker is that the need for ice and salt means that making ice cream is a very messy, drippy enterprise.
However, nowadays, modern cooks have several other options for making homemade ice cream. You don’t have to wait until the warm months to make this delectable treat because your hand-cranked ice cream maker is so messy. Kitchen gadget manufacturers have created wonderful appliances so that you can have homemade ice cream in your kitchen all year long.
Frozen canister ice cream makers consist of a canister that contains liquid coolant in its walls. You put the whole canister in your freezer for about 12 hours. Once the canister is frozen, you take it out, pour the ice cream base into the canister and stir it constantly until the ice cream is fully frozen.
Some canister ice cream freezers are designed to work with a stand mixer, so you do not have to stir. You can also buy an electric ice cream freezer. These are stand-alone cooling units.
They are very efficient and they produce excellent ice cream very consistently. You simply pour the ice cream into the metal bowl in the unit and let it run for about 20 to 25 minutes. These units can be a bit pricey and they will take up a decent amount of space in your kitchen.
However, they do make large batches of homemade ice cream, so if you make a lot of ice cream, it might be worth it to you.
