What is a Deep Freezer? Why Buy One?

The fridge is one of the greatest inventions of our time. It’s the go-to appliance for almost everyone when the weather gets a bit hot. We could say the same about a freezer. Getting ice in your drink on a hot summer day feels like heaven. But is there a difference between the freezer in your fridge and a deep freezer?

What is a Deep Freezer?

A freezer full of ice and a tin can.

While a fridge can both freeze and cool the things that you put in it, a deep freezer is solely designed for freezing things, and it does not come with a refrigerator compartment. If we are using this definition, both upright freezers and chest freezers can be listed as types of deep freezers.

As a standalone appliance, the deep freezer can freeze food items and any other things you place in it and maintain temperatures around 0 °F, or -18°C. As mentioned before, there are two types of deep freezers that only differ in configuration. The upright freezer is vertically orientated, and it features swing doors. On the other hand, a chest freezer features a lid that you can open from above.

Why is it Called a Deep Freezer?

You might be wondering why the freezer compartment in your refrigerator is not called a deep freezer. After all, they can both freeze food items, right? The name deep freezer has little to do with the actual freezing and more to do with space.

Since a dedicated freezer does not have refrigeration compartments that keep things cool without freezing them, they have less freezer space. You will find, therefore, that you will get more space with both a chest freezer and an upright freezer.

A typical freezer compartment in your fridge can start as low as four cubic feet capacity. On the other hand, deep freezers are way bigger and have more storage capacity than freezer compartments in fridges. Most deep freezers range in capacity from 5 cubic feet to over 21 cubic feet.

How Cold are Deep Freezers?

The temperature inside a freezer can get very cold. The purpose of these appliances is to store food. They can also be used to preserve medicines and samples for a long time. This means you don’t just get freezers in the home but in commercial settings as well.

Average deep freezers can get as cold as -18 degrees Celsius, which converts to 0 degrees Fahrenheit. This is what makes it possible for you to store items that need to be stored at minus temperature.

It’s important to note that the temperature in deep freezers fluctuates. So while it can get as low as 0 degrees Fahrenheit, this temperature might not be prevalent at all times. It will change depending on several factors.

If you want to store something that’s very sensitive to temperature, you will need to have a thermometer with you so you can monitor it. This will help you tell the temperature inside your freezer at any given moment.

The temperature inside a deep freezer can be adjusted depending on what you need to do. If you set it too low, you may end up with frost covering your food, and some items can even be stuck in there until you defrost or power it off for a while.

Does Deep Freezer Use a Lot of Electricity?

Because a deep freezer can achieve very low temperatures, it can be tempting to imagine them using a lot of electricity. However, this is not the case at all. A deep freezer and a regular fridge of similar size usually consume the same amount of electricity.

To use even less electricity, you should avoid opening the door of your deep freezer frequently. This will prevent the loss of temperature inside, and your freezer won’t have to work too hard to maintain cold temperatures.

Do You Need a Deep Freezer?

Unless you stay alone and you don’t need to store a lot of foodstuffs, it can be safe to assume that a deep freezer can be a handy appliance to have in your home. It will enable you to keep large amounts of food items frozen for long periods of time. As mentioned before, it offers more in terms of storage capacity than a regular fridge freezer.

Here are some points to consider if you are wondering whether you need a freezer in your home:

  • If you are a family that enjoys many meals a month, a freezer will enable you to keep lots of ingredients and meat in your home.
  • If you live in a rural area or you are far from fresh food and grocery stores, a freezer will reduce the need to travel frequently since you can buy food in advance and preserve it.
  • A freezer comes in handy if you prefer buying things in bulk and freezing them at the same time.
  • You can buy food during seasonal sales and store it for future use.

There are lots of things that you can store in a freezer. These appliances are generally ideal for organizing and storing large amounts of food for use within a few months. Deep freezers can also accommodate meal prep routines. For instance, you can store pre-made dinners, soups, and stews. However, it’s important to know the optimal time frames for storing different kinds of food in a deep freezer.

Foods like ground meats, poultry, and hamburgers can be stored for up to four months. You can also store lamb, beef, whole chicken, veal, and pork for up to a year. Soups and stews will be good for two to three months, and fish usually goes bad after eight months.

Deep Freezer Storage and Space Considerations

When it comes to capacity, both upright and chest freezers range from five cubic feet to 25 cubic feet. However, you will find that there are more capacious chest freezers than there are larger upright freezers. We can therefore generalize and say that chest freezers have more storage capacity.

As a bonus, a chest freezer can also store larger and more oddly shaped items which can be difficult to place in upright freezers.

Can a Deep Freezer be Too Cold?

A Ref Freezer Thermometer inside a refrigerator.

It’s possible for a deep freezer to be too cold at times. As mentioned before, the temperature in a deep freezer generally stays around 0 degrees Fahrenheit or -18 degrees celsius. It’s possible that sometimes you can check the temperature inside your freezer and find that it’s below 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

In such instances, a deep freezer will be considered too cold. To fix this issue, you can either adjust the temperature or check the unit because there might be something wrong with it.

There are several issues you can encounter if your deep freezer gets too cold. For instance, you can end up with spoiled food or medicine. Temperatures that are too low can damage the items you will be storing in your freezer.

You’ll often find that if a freezer gets too cold, everything inside it will be too cold, and it ends up covered in ice. Apart from the food items or drugs being damaged, you can also have a very difficult time trying to get them out of the deep freezer.

There are several reasons why a deep freezer can become too cold. One of the possible issues may be that the deep freezer’s air damper is damaged. The damper is a critical part of your deep freezer, and if it’s malfunctioning, you will need to have a professional fix your freezer as soon as possible.

There could also be issues with your freezer’s controls. This is a very common issue. If the temperature control is defective, you can end up with temperatures that are lower than the normal range.

Frequently Asked Questions About Deep Freezers

How long does it take for a deep freezer to get cold?

For a new deep freezer to reach its required temperature, it usually takes about four hours. It’s important to wait until your deep freezer gets cold enough before you put any food items or drugs in it.

What is the best temperature for a deep freezer?

A deep freezer allows you to control the temperature inside, depending on what purpose you want it to serve. It’s important to know how cold you want the freezer to be before you begin to maneuver the settings. In general, temperature settings on a deep freezer are usually labeled as 1-5 or 1-7, or 1-9.

The one setting is the warmest, and temperatures decrease as the numbers go up. This means if you want to achieve the lowest temperature, you should set your freezer to the highest number. If you have a freezer with a range of one to five and you are storing food items, you will generally get the best results if you keep the setting around two to three.

However, if you need colder conditions, four or five will do. It’s advisable to leave the freezer at a setting of four for at least a day before you switch to five. This will offer a smooth transition.

How to make a deep freezer colder?

If you need your deep freezer colder, there are several things you can do. The first thing would be to avoid opening it frequently. This will allow it to store the cold inside. Keeping the freezer closed also reduced the amount of energy needed to keep things frozen. You can also make your freezer colder by adjusting the temperature knob. If it’s set to moderate, you can turn it down further towards a higher number.
