The piano was invented in 1709 in Italy by harpsichord-maker Bartolomeo di Francesco Cristofori. He named the keyboard instrument gravicèmbalo col piano e forte which means “harpsichord with loud and soft.” It was later shortened to “fortepiano” and finally to just “piano.” For nearly a century, only aristocrats and royalty could afford them because the earliest models were so expensive.
The Crystal Piano is considered the most expensive piano and sold for $3.22 million at an auction. It features a transparent body and was designed by Canadian manufacturer Heintzman Pianos. The first time it was played in public was during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games by Chinese pianist Lang Lang.

Types of Upright Pianos

Upright pianos are among the most common types of pianos on the market. They are commonly seen in churches in the United States. An upright piano can more easily fit into someone’s home or a building than its larger sister, the grand piano. They are not necessarily small; they just aren’t as large or wide as grand pianos.
You can fit an upright piano right up next to a wall very conveniently. This allows you to put the piano in the corner of a room and keep it out of the way. These pianos are less desirable for live stage performances, as the pianist will have difficulty seeing the crowd or being seen by the crowd. In this case, the pianist would be staring at a wall or the piano itself. These pianos are mostly used in homes, in schools, or to provide music for church services.
The biggest difference between an upright piano and a grand piano is that the strings and the action are vertical in the upright version of this instrument. As a result, the piano functions completely differently from a grand piano, and it will feel different from a grand piano when you play it.
If you have grown accustomed to playing on one without experiencing the other, then you might be quite shocked to feel the difference for yourself. You can play both in the same fashion, for the most part, but an upright piano is going to have a unique feel when you hit the keys.
There are many different styles and sizes of upright pianos on the market. Most of the time, people prefer to buy upright pianos that are somewhere in the mid-range of the sizes available. These pianos are a little bit more affordable than grand pianos, but they are still expensive instruments.

Frequently Asked Questions
What type of instrument is a piano?
Pianos belong to a family of instruments called chordophones, which are instruments that produce sound via strings that vibrate. While a piano is a stringed instrument, it uses small hammers to strike the strings in order to make the sound it produces rather than via direct contact with a bow or human hands, such as a violin or a guitar.
What is a small piano called?
A small piano is called a spinet. These small pianos typically measure a maximum of 58 inches wide and just 38 inches tall. Spinet pianos work well for those who live in small homes or apartments, but due to their unusual size and design, they cost more to service and repair.
What piano should I pick?
The best piano for you will depend on its size and how well it fits in your space, as well as the sound it produces and how the keys feel. The best way to pick a piano is to try several different models out yourself in person before you invest in a piano.
Which pianos hold their value?
Grand pianos tend to hold their value the best. When it comes to brand, Steinway pianos tend to hold value the most, and may even increase in value over time. Most pianos will decrease in value over time unless they are a specific make and model that’s considered rare or if they are antique.
What is the lifespan of a piano?
The average piano has a lifespan of approximately 50 years if it is well maintained and cared for. However, some pianos could last as long as 100 years with the proper care.
