What is the purpose of a baster?

A baster, which is sometimes referred to as a turkey baster, is a tube that is attached to a rubber bulb that is used to suck up and squirt cooking juices from a pan of roasting meat or poultry into the meat itself to keep it moist. There are several types of basters including bulb basters and silicone bulb basters, basting and pastry brushes, and meat needle injectors that can be used to keep a variety of meats and other foods moist and marinated.

Most ball basters are about a foot long and have a silicone bulb head that’s attached to a glass, plastic, metal, or stainless steel tube that tapers from one end to the other. If the tube has an angled tube tip to help draw in the basting juice it works even better because it does not drip. Basters are difficult to clean, but some parts are dishwasher safe, and angled tip basters are easier to clean.

You can also baste meat and poultry as well as other foods with a basting or pastry brush, but it does not produce as much of the juice as a bulb baster does. Basters are pretty affordable and economical since you use them over and over again.

When cooking a large piece of meat such as a whole turkey, you should baste it every 30 to 45 minutes while smaller pieces of meat, such as chicken, can be basted every 15 to 20 minutes. When barbecuing meat, you should baste it every 15 minutes. This process helps the meats retain their hot juices, decrease moisture loss, and decrease the loss of the steady temperature of the meat.

Here is a list of the different options that are available on the market today to create the most amazing meats, vegetables, and more through the basting process.

Turkey basters also come in handy for removing hot liquid from pots and pans or a layer of fat when you are simmering stock on the stove.

Basters are super easy to use because you simply squeeze the bulb which pulls the liquid into the baster then you release the bulb, allowing the juice to go into the meat or other food that you are basting.
