10 Different Types of Cookies

Homemade chocolate chip cookies

Craving a cookie? Whether cooked or baked, cookies are sweet, tiny, and delightful. They’re typically made from ingredients such as flour, sugar, eggs, and butter. Some cookies may also include ingredients such as nuts, raisins, chocolate chips, etc. They also come in different shapes and sizes.

Some like their cookies with a creamy cup of coffee or hot chocolate. The great thing about cookies is that they can be enjoyed by the whole family as a snack, dessert, or special treat.

Baking them as a family is even better as it’ll bring you together while filling your home with a lovely aroma. Cookies also make for a fantastic gift, especially around the holidays.

While cookies come in a wide variety of flavors, my personal favorite is vanilla, although I’m not opposed to an ooey-gooey chocolate cookie either. Keep reading as I take you through a cookie odyssey of scrumptious proportions.

1. The irresistible chocolate chip cookie

Chocolate chip cookies are arguably the most popular types of cookies ever invented and the first person to ever make them was Ruth Graves in what can only be referred to as a happy accident. Ruth, who at the time was the manager and baker at a restaurant, ran out of baker’s chocolate and decided to replace it with pieces of Nestle’s semi-sweet chocolate.

The results were awesome and today we have her to thank for the chocolate chip cookie. They can be soft, doughy, crisp, or crunchy depending on how you like them.

Chocolate chip cookies are a hit with my kids and they like to enjoy them with warm or cold milk for breakfast. They’re my favorite too but with coffee instead. You can try baking these for your loved ones at home using all-purpose flour, brown sugar, eggs, butter, and semi-sweet.

2. Soft, crispy, and mouthwatering snickerdoodles cookies for the snickerdoodles in your life.

These types of cookies are pretty awesome too and I guarantee that your family will love them. A friend of mine invited me to her home for a cup of tea the other day and I was welcomed by the lovely smell of snickerdoodle cookies, which is simply unforgettable.  They’re absolutely delicious thanks to a sprinkling of cinnamon and sugar, and they can be crisp or soft with a slightly cracked surface.

To bake snickerdoodle cookies, you need eggs, flour, cream of tartar, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon. It’s important to beat the [rimary ingredients together at a low speed, making sure to scrape the bowl often until well mixed.

The sugar and cinnamon are added later after being mixed together in a separate bowl. You’ll know they’re ready when the edges are lightly browned.

3. Another kids’ favorite: Monster cookies

My kids are always requesting that I bake these delicious monster cookies for them. Luckily, I find them easy to make and they don’t take up too much time. They’re best served to your little ones with a glass of milk any time of the day.

A few key ingredients you’ll want to have on hand for these cookies include chocolate chips, multi-colored chocolate candies, creamy peanut butter, vanilla extract, both packed light brown sugar, and granulated sugar as well as softened butter and quick-cooking oatmeal.

You’ll also want to combine the sugars first before you add the other required ingredients and make sure the cookies are at least 2 inches apart on the cookie sheets before you start baking. Let stand for about 3 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool. When cool, store in large resealable plastic bags.

4. If you didn’t think peanut butter and chocolate could go together, think again.

These peanut butter blossom cookies are another family favorite that you can bring to school events, potlucks, and even barbecues as a special treat for young and old. If you’ve never attempted to bake them before, then it’s high time you did. It’s as easy as whipping up some peanut butter, cream butter, and sugar until the mixture is nice and fluffy.

Next, you’ll want to mix in some creamy peanut butter, making sure to fold it in carefully so as to not disturb the beautiful balance and harmony of the other ingredients. Oh, and don’t forget to fold in about 35 chocolate kisses before you bake these in an oven for about 15 minutes max. I know you’ll want to eat them straight out of the oven but I assure you, they taste even better when allowed to cool.

5. Lick your lips! These cookies are irresistible.

Shortbread cookies served with milk.

Shortbread cookies are prepared with lots of butter than flour, hence the name “shortbread”. They don’t require as much sugar and flour as other types of cookies and this is what gives them their unique crumbly yet tender texture.

The shortbread cookies originate in Scotland but have gained popularity worldwide. If you want to try preparing these for your loved ones, you’ll need ingredients such as all-purpose flour, powdered sugar, kosher salt and unsalted butter. Simple, right?

Well, the preparation is just as easy with the first step being to combine the creamy softened butter, and sugar until fluffy. Add vanilla, and flour, and then mix well until the texture is well combined.

Shape the cookies or put them into the cookie sheets and then put them in the oven and bake for 12 to 15 minutes until the cookies start turning golden brown. Remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool completely. After that, they are ready for you and your family to enjoy.

6. These soft, pillowy cookies with a marshmallow filling will keep them coming back for more.

Whoopie pies with a glass of milk.

Often mistaken for Oreos, Whoopie Pies are a type of cookie that originates from Pennsylvania, U.S. Although they look like quite the feat, these cookies are fairly easy to make once you get the hang of it and can either have a marshmallow or vanilla cream filling.

For these types of cookies, you’ll need shortening, white sugar,  eggs, all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, milk, and vanilla extract, to name but a few ingredients.

First, you’ll combine the shortening, the sugar, and egg yolks while sifting flour in another bowl before adding the other dry ingredients. The trick is to add the vanilla extract at the end and fold it in carefully so as to not disturb yo your mixture.

7. Spicy, melt-in-your-mouth molasses cookies (warning: seriously addictive!)

Molasses cookies sprinkled with sugar.

Although they’re called molasses cookies, the main ingredient in these is ginger, which is what gives them that kick. They can also be made with a simple combination of sugar and molasses as well. They usually come out nice and soft and they’re absolutely perfect for gifting or nibbling on with a spot of tea.

The main ingredients needed to make molasses cookies are flour, ground ginger, white sugar, margarine, eggs, cinnamon, ground cloves, and of course, molasses. To make them, get a large bowl and mix in sugar, margarine, and eggs until you achieve a smooth texture, and then add in the molasses. You’ll want to combine the flour, baking soda, ginger, salt, cinnamon, and cloves also in a separate bowl before bringing the two together in a single dough that you’ll chill for an hour.

This might sound like a lot of work but it’s totally worth it because the end result will be deliciously soft and chewy cookies that you won’t be able to put down.

8. What could be better than butter cookies? Seriously, nothing.

Butter cookies on a wooden tray.

We all want to be able to just take a stick of butter and eat it, but we don’t live in that type of world. Well, these cookies are the next best thing and they’re called butter cookies because they usually have a high ratio of butter to flour.

They’re similar to shortbread cookies with the only difference being that they require a lot of sugar and a bit more flour to help hold their shape. I’ve made these several times before and can attest to how addictive they can b and they’re fairly quick and easy to make, too.

To bake butter cookies, you’ll need salted and softened butter, some vanilla extract, 7 icing sugar, and plain flour. You’ll start by whisking the salted butter, sugar, and vanilla until pale and fluffy.

To the mixture, you’ll want to add all the flour and mix again until well combined before you spoon the dough into a piping bag fitted with a medium star nozzle. This will make it easier to shape the cookies when transferring the dough onto the baking tray. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to cook these.

9. Introducing: Chocolate Crinkle Cookies! You won’t want to put these down.

Close-up of chocolate crinkle cookies.

If you’re a chocoholic like me, then you’ll love these cookies. You do, however, need a lot of patience to make them as they must be refrigerated overnight. Once that chewy, melt-in-your-mouth taste hits your taste buds though, you’ll find that they’re well worth the wait.

To make these incredibly delish cookies, you’ll need the usual ingredients such as four, sugar, salt, eggs, and vanilla extract as well as ½ cup of confectioners’ sugar. That’ll be your secret ingredient.

To make these, you’ll want to mix the sugar, cocoa, and oil and beat on the eggs until well mixed in a medium-sized bowl, and then stir in the vanilla too. In another bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Combine the dry and wet ingredients and then cover the dough and leave it in the fridge for not less than 5 hours or overnight. This is where the patience comes in. After that, you can shape the dough into balls and then coat each ball with confectioners’ sugar before baking for 10 to 12 minutes.

10. Cute ‘n sweet: Sugar cookies

Star-shaped sugar cookies

The history of these cookies can be traced back to 1877. They originated in Sweden and the recipe has been passed on to generations since then.

As with most of the cookies here, they’re super easy to make, which is why they’re so beloved. To bake them, you’ll need such classic ingredients as softened butter, shortening, sugar, an egg, and vanilla extract.

For best results, make sure to mix all the wet ingredients in a large bowl first, and then all the dry ingredients in another bowl before you combine the wet and dry ingredients and beat them into creamed mixture.

Shape the dough into balls, roll in additional sugar and then place them on greased baking sheets. After baking for 10 to 15 minutes, allow the cookies to cool so you can enjoy them with your loved ones.
