Oatmeal can often get a bad reputation. Many people remember being forced to eat bland, soupy, disgusting bowls of oatmeal for breakfast as children. Wondering what to make for breakfast? It can be easy to get caught in a rut. Have you ever found yourself saying, I have no idea what to make for breakfast.
Knowing the different types of breakfast dishes can help you make a meal plan, or simply decide what to enjoy in the morning. To fight boredom, choose different types of dishes for different days. This can also help you eat a balanced diet.
Egg Dishes
Egg dishes are perfect for breakfast. They are filling, full of protein, and contain healthy fats. This helps get your brain firing, and can help you feel full without consuming a large amount of food.
Scrambled Eggs
One of the simplest way to make eggs, scrambled eggs are ubiquitous for breakfast. They should be light, fluffy, and flavorful. To liven things up, add green pepper, onion, cheese, or ham to your scrambled eggs.
Fried Eggs
Fried eggs are another way to enjoy eggs. When cooking fried eggs, how it’s cooked is determined by how done the yolk is. A runny yolk is known as sunny side up, if it’s not flipped.
If it’s flipped, it’s over easy. If the yolk is only slightly runny, it’s over medium. A well done yolk is known as over well.
Poached Eggs
Poached eggs are a personal favorite for me. They can seem intimidating, but they are easy to make. Poached eggs are cooked in boiling water. Unlike boiled eggs, you’ll crack the eggs and then place them into the water.
It only takes a few minutes to cook them using this method. Like fried eggs, you can choose to leave the egg runny or well done.
Omelet
Omelets are a great egg based dish. You’ll scramble the egg, and then fry it. You can add in whatever you like. Cheese, mushrooms, onions, and peppers are good choices. You can also add bacon, ham, or sausage.
The nice thing about omelets is you can use whatever you have on hand, including leftover cooked veggies.
Frittata
Frittatas are also made with eggs. They can be made on the stove or in the oven. You can even make mini frittas with a muffin pan. To make them, you’ll need eggs, which are whisked, and a few tablespoons of milk.
If frying, you’ll need butter as well. When it comes to other ingredients, the choice is yours. You’ll need a few cups of cooked and seasoned veggies, and cheese.
Broccoli, cheddar cheese, and green onions are a great combination. Mushrooms can be combined with argula and goat cheese. Cherry tomatoes, zucchini, and mozzarella are another option.
Meat Dishes
There are a few staple meats that are commonly found on the breakfast table. They are typically combined with other types of breakfast dish to create a complete meal.
Sausage
There are several types of sausage you can choose for breakfast. I love sausage links, especially with pancakes. Sausage patties can be served with eggs, biscuits, or French toast.
If you are feeling fancy, or brave, you can make your own sausage from ground pork.
Bacon
Bacon is my favorite guilty pleasure. I know it’s not the best food for me health wise, but I love it. So, I occasionally allow myself to enjoy this wonderful pork treat.
Bacon can be served alongside pancakes, waffles, French toast, or biscuits. Add it to an omelet or breakfast burrito. Of course, you’ll have to sneak a piece or two while you are preparing the food. It’s an unwritten rule!
If you want a healthier option, consider turkey bacon.
Ham
There are a few types of ham you can serve up with breakfast as well. Country ham is very salty, and it has been cured for a long time. This is the traditional type of ham that’s served for breakfast.
However, city ham, or sandwich ham, can also be great for breakfast. Diced ham can be added to omelets. Sliced ham can be used ot make breakfast sandwiches.
Bread
Bread is another common breakfast food. In fact, many people find it difficult to imagine a breakfast without bread.
Muffins
Muffins are a beloved breakfast food. They are typically slightly sweet and often include fruit. They are great as a snack, or when you need to eat breakfast on the go.
Blueberry muffins, strawberry muffins, and banana nut muffins are a few of the most popular types of muffins.
Toast
Toast can be very simple, but it can also be jazzed up to create a nice breakfast. Plain or buttered toast can be served with nearly any traditional breakfast.
However, if you want the toast to be the focal point of breakfast, you can add peanut butter, jelly, chia seeds, honey, or your favorite fruits. Use a multigrain bread to make it even healthier, and enjoy your toast guilt-free.
You can also make French toast. It’s typically made from French bread, which is dipped in egg. Then, it’s fried until brown. Serve it with maple syrup or honey.
Donuts
Donuts are typically picked up from a store or bakery, but you can make your own as well. They can be made or topped with everything from a simple sugar glaze to peanut butter or even cheese.
Loaves of Bread
Banana bread is one of my favorite breakfast foods. One of the things I love about it is that it’s just as good, if not better, the next day. I’ll often make banana bread and then eat it for breakfast for the next two or three days.
Cinnamon rolls are also commonly eaten for breakfast. They are typically very sweet. You can purchase premade cinnamon rolls, or purchase cinnamon rolls that are ready to bake.
Of course, you can also make your own from scratch. This allows you to create a healthier version than you’ll find in your store’s bakery.
Biscuits
Biscuits are so nice for breakfast. They are light and flaky. Biting into one just wakes you up a bit more, particularly when they are made from scratch.
You can pair your biscuits with meat as a biscuit sandwich, or serve it alongside eggs or meat as a side. Of course, if you want biscuits to be the star of the table, you should make biscuits and gravy.
Grains and Rice
Sometimes you just want a simple carb-loaded breakfast. After all, not all carbs are bad. They are also typically easy to make and can be served with other types of breakfast dishes as well.
Oatmeal
Oatmeal is total comfort food. It’s warm, creamy, and tasty. There are so many options when it comes to oatmeal. Banana nut, maple, and fruit-based oatmeals just to name a few.
You can make your own oatmeal from oats, or you can choose a premade oatmeal in your favorite flavor. Either way, they are a healthy breakfast option.
Pancakes and Waffles
Pancakes and waffles are a fairly regular Saturday morning occurrence at my house. They are fast and can be fairly healthy. My secret is adding fruit to the batter before cooking. Bananas work well for this and essentially disappear into the batter. You could even add avocados or apple sauce.
You can serve them with maple syrup or honey. Alternatively, try adding peanut butter or topping with your favorite fruit.
Rice
Rice has recently become a part of my breakfast rotation. Personally, I love basmati rice for nearly everything, including breakfast. However, you can also use regular white or brown rice.
You can create a rice and fruit bowl, but my favorite method is to make it more similar to oatmeal. You’ll need rice, milk, sugar, and potentially fruit.
The rice is cooked, then the milk and sugar are added. Then, you can top it with fruit, or season it with cinnamon or maple syrup.
Breakfast Tacos and Wraps
Another great option for busy families is breakfast tacos and wraps. These are easy to make and can be eaten on the go.
Breakfast Tacos
Breakfast tacos are simple and fun. They are typically made with scrambled eggs, cheese, and meat. You can choose bacon, ham, or sausage. To speed things up, you can even use bacon bits.
You can also add your favorite veggies. Tomatoes, onions, peppers, and avocado. Just warm a tortilla, and then add the chosen fillings. Serve with salsa, taco sauce, or Pico de gallo.
Breakfast Burritos
Breakfast burritos are essentially the same concept as breakfast tacos. Instead of being served as a taco, they are rolled into a tortilla and served as a burrito.
This is a great choice for a grab-and-go breakfast. You can spice things up by adding jalapenos or green chilis.
Fruit Wraps
Prefer a fruity breakfast? You can make fruit wraps. Like their hearty cousins, these are easy to eat when you are busy.
Kiwi wraps are made with kiwi, peanut butter, and cream cheese inside a tortilla.
You can also make a cottage cheese wrap. You’ll add cottage cheese, granola, and your favorite fruits to the tortilla. If you aren’t a fan of cottage cheese, you can substitute Greek yogurt.
Breakfast Potatoes
Potatoes are a staple at my house. They are often served for dinner, but they are also great for breakfast. There are several ways you can enjoy them in the mornings.
Hashbrowns
Hashbrowns are essentially shredded fried potatoes. The slivers of the potato stick together when cooking, creating a crispy serving-sized portion.
You can cook them with butter, but they become even more indulgent when you add a little bacon grease.
They should be well seasoned. Salt, onion powder, and pepper are essential.
You can take a cue from Waffle House, and add cheese, onions, peppers, mushrooms, or even chili to your hashbrowns before serving. In my opinion, they are best enjoyed plain, alongside your other favorite breakfast foods.
Skillet Potatoes
This is another simple potato breakfast dish. The potatoes are chopped into small cubes. You can cook them with olive oil or butter. You’ll also add onion when cooking, and salt and pepper to season.
That’s really all it takes. Keeping it simple allows the flavor of the potatoes to shine through. Serve it with your favorite meat, bread, or egg dishes.
Potato Pancakes
Tired of hashbrowns? Try potato pancakes! You’ll grate the potato and onion. Add some egg, milk, and flour. After adding your seasonings, you are ready to fry up some potato pancakes.
They are savory, which makes them a nice change from the sugary sweet style of pancakes. They can be served as a side. You can also add your favorite meat or eggs to the top of the pancake, and serve it as a complete meal.
Bacon Breakfast Skillet Meal
You can avoid a dirty kitchen with this bacon breakfast skillet recipe. Instead of cooking several different dishes, it combines all the ingredients into one skillet. It includes bacon, eggs, and potatoes.
You can use either cubed potatoes or shredded potatoes for hash browns. Onions, garlic, and butter will also be needed for the dish. It’s hearty and yummy. In fact, you can actually serve it for brunch or even dinner.
Breakfast Casseroles
Breakfast casseroles are a popular breakfast option. Many of them can be made in one pan. Then they are baked in the oven. This makes them easy to prepare.
Hashbrown Breakfast Casserole
A hashbrown breakfast casserole has hashbrowns, of course. It also includes eggs and cheese. When it comes to meat, you can choose.
Sausage, bacon, or ham are all appropriate for this type of casserole. You can also add veggies like broccoli or spinach. It’s a great way to get kids to eat their veggies.
Sausage and Gravy Casserole
I gotta be honest. This casserole is so rich and filling, that you may spend the rest of the day on the couch. This casserole includes sausage, gravy, eggs, and cheese. It’s everything you love about breakfast, in one dish.
You can make everything from scratch. However, store-bought canned biscuits and powdered gravy mix make the casserole easy to create, while still providing a great flavor.
Fruit and Dairy Breakfast Dishes
What would a list of breakfast dishes be without including fruit and dairy? Of course, many of the dishes mentioned above contain fruit. However, these dishes have fruit or dairy as the main ingredient.
They are healthy, filling, and easy to make. They can also be enjoyed on the go, making them perfect for weekdays.
Parfaits
My favorite thing about parfaits, other than their taste, is that they can be made ahead of time. You can do this with any cups you have on hand. However, purchasing disposable plastic cups with dome lids makes it much easier, particularly if you want to make them ahead.
All you need for a parfait is yogurt, fruit, and granola. The type of yogurt and the type of fruit is really up to you. Berries, peaches, bananas, and pineapple are a few fun fruits to consider
Fruit and Yogurt Bowls
Yogurt bowls are similar to parfaits, only in a bowl. The other difference is that they can be a bit more complex, or have more ingredients.
Just like parfaits, these bowls are customizable. You can even set up a little bar, and allow everyone to choose their own ingredients. Greek yogurt works well for yogurt owls, but any type of yogurt is ok.
The other ingredients needed are fruit, of course, and something crunchy. Peaches, berries, oranges, pomegranates, and kiwi are a few options.
When it comes to the crunch, chia seeds are the traditional choice. Granola, toasted coconut, almonds, or pecans are also great choices.
Smoothies
Smoothies are great for those days when you need to eat breakfast, but you don’t want to eat breakfast. Essentially, it packs the nutrition of a yogurt bowl into a drink.
Most smoothies are made with yogurt. However, you can also skip the yogurt and add smoothie powder or protein powder. Choose any fruit you like. Frozen fruits work very well, but you can use fresh ones as well.
If you want to up the health benefits, add some kale, spinach, or a carrot to your smoothie. You won’t even know it’s there.
