If you have a ton of houseplants lying around, then you’re probably wondering where in the world you’re going to put them all. It’s true—a lot of “plant parents” just can’t help themselves when it comes to adding new plants to their collection.
But eventually, you will run out of room and either need to give some plants away (gasp!) or find more plant stands. Not everyone has the budget to buy brand-new plant stands, but thankfully, YouTube creator Planterina is here to show us how to make our own!
She said if you’re running out of surface space for your plants, making this little DIY stand is easy. First, look around for some old shelving that you might have sitting around. If you don’t have actual shelving, you can also use planks of wood, too.

Key Tips for this DIY Plant Stand
Just make sure that the wood is in good condition and that it’s large enough and sturdy enough to support the planters once you’re done. Next, she shows herself cutting the old shelving she found into smaller sections.
Once all of the pieces of wooden shelving were cut, she used a ton of wood glue and stacked three of the pieces on top of each other. This not only gives the piece a cooler look, but I assume it also helps to make it sturdy and more stable so it can handle the weight of the plants once she’s done.
Next, she took two of the pieces of wood and screwed them into the base using long wood screws and a power drill. Then, she did the same thing with the final piece, attaching this section to the two wood pieces to form the top. And that’s basically it! Now you have a simple, clean-looking plant stand that doesn’t cost a fortune.
I also like how she made the bottom section a little “uneven” so that one side stuck out a little further. This gave her another place to put a potted plant on the bottom. Overall, this is a super quick, super simple project that virtually anyone an do! And if you don’t have wood lying around, you can always pick up some pre-cut sections at your local home improvement store.
White (which is what she had) isn’t my first choice, so I would probably grab some “raw” wood so that I could paint or stain it myself to a different color. But white does look great in virtually any space, so there’s that.
What Some Viewers Said
Viewer Rebecca Webb loved the idea and said, “Someone hold my wine, I have to go get my drill. This looks GREAT! Great idea Amanda!”
And viewer Denise Haddix mentioned the common problem of never having enough room for houseplants, saying,” Great idea. Years ago, I made one out of copper piping. But of course, that only holds one. My house is so loaded down with plants, yes, I have no place to put them anymore.”
I think this is a fabulous project, especially if you’re in a pinch. Instead of paying hundreds of dollars for a flimsy plant stand on Amazon or another website, you can easily make your own. The use of thick, heavy wood makes this plant stand quite sturdy and substantial, too.
When you fill a pot with dirt and then add water, houseplants can get quite heavy, so it’s important to make sure that your plant stands are strong enough to support them. Maybe I need to go through the shed and look for some wood or head out to grab some of my own so I can make this, too!
