It doesn’t matter who you are, just about everyone has some type of old glass jar (or multiple jars!) lying around at home. Whether they’re sitting in a pile somewhere inside your kitchen cabinets or in the fridge, most people just throw them in the trash to add more garbage to the landfill. Fortunately, YouTube Creator Homemade DIY Crafts is here to show us one way to repurpose a glass jar and turn it into something functional and beautiful.
Watch this glass jar transformation here:
The video starts with the creator holding up a glass jar with a classic twist-lid top. They don’t really say what the jar was originally used for, but you can easily do this with any glass jar. However, I’d recommend you try this DIY craft with a larger jar rather than one of the smaller ones like a baby food or cat food jar. Anyway, they don’t show it, but you can clearly see that the jar has been thoroughly cleaned and dried, and if there were any product packaging labels on it, they’re now completely removed, too.
Once the jar is clean and dry, they apply some glue to the outside. It looks like your standard white glue, but you can probably use any type of glue that you have, including a hot glue gun if you prefer. Note that they used a brush to evenly apply the glue all over the rim, sides, and bottom outer section.
Next, they show a funky foam-like material or netting that they stretch over the jar. This material is often used to package and ship breakable items, so I’d venture to guess that this YouTuber took some old packaging material and used it here.
However, you can probably also find this stuff at many arts and crafts or hobby stores, or even maybe at some office supply or home improvement stores. The netting is stretchy, and they slowly pull it over the jar until it’s completely covered. Once it’s around the jar, they cut the excess off from the top and bottom.
The funky netting is then gently molded around the curved bottom edge of the jar for a snug fit. Once it’s ready to go, the YouTuber places the jar on top of a large piece of brown paper to protect the table underneath and they start spraying the whole thing with a beautiful golden bronze colored spray paint.
Once it’s painted, it totally transforms the entire thing and turns it into a bright metallic work of art. After the paint is dry, the creator ties a matching shimmery gold-colored ribbon or string around the opening of the jar to add a touch of flair. When the video pans out, you can see that the final product is used as a beautiful flower vase. You can also use this for succulents or small houseplants, too.
A lot of viewers loved the project, with most of them exclaiming how beautiful it was. Some people asked the YouTuber to tell them exactly what type of spray paint they used since it’s not completely clear in the video.
However, you could probably use any color or any type you like. This project also doesn’t have to be painted metallic. You can also use matte or chalk paint if you like. And, you don’t necessarily need to add that stretchy foam stuff either.
Just take an old glass jar that’s lying around, clean it thoroughly, paint it, and enjoy! I do think the addition of the beautiful string or ribbon around the top edge really does give it some flair.
Maybe I need to go through my fridge and kitchen cabinets to look for some glass jars myself. It’s a fantastic and easy spring project and also a great choice if you have kids at home since this DIY is something that almost anyone can do with just a few basic materials. Go ahead, start going through your kitchen and see how many beautiful vases you can create!
