Because they’re so popular, we’ll expand on the Peonies here.
Peonies are very fragrant small cup-shaped flowers that bloom for about 7-10 days in mid-spring and wither after winter. Native in northern Japan, these showy flowers can stand alone as a focal flower or be used in an arrangement for bridal bouquets, table centerpieces or corsages.
The flower symbolizes a number of things, including bashfulness, compassion, a happy life, happy marriage, good health and prosperity. Its name itself came to mean Shame or Bashfulness because of the myth that the nymphs hide in the Peony’s petals.
It’s named after the Greek god Paeon, a physican of the gods, who’s said to have gotten the plant on Mount Olympus from Apollo’s mother and discovered its healing effects.
A woodland plant, Peonies prefer shady areas like a shades garden. Its showy and attractive foliage is best seen as a hedge or edger. Colors can range from pure white to deep dark red and the flowers are categorized according to their petal shape such as single, double, semi double, Japanese, anemone and bomb.
