Because they’re so popular, we’ll expand on the Yarrow here.
Yarrows are herbaceous flowering plants that originated from the northern part of the globe. It got its genus name Achillea millefolium because of the mythological story of how the Greek hero Achilles used the plant to treat the battle wounds of his soldiers.
Aside from treating battle wounds, yarrows are also known as carpenter’s weed because they often used it to treat their wounds and cuts.
In the 17th century, the leaves of yarrows were eaten like spinach. It was also a main ingredient for making soups. It is, however, also notoriously known for its bitter and pungent taste. Thus, acquiring the name Poor man’s pepper. Its taste can be so strong it can make a cow’s milk taste bitter if it ate too much yarrow.
