Witch Hazel belongs to the family of flowering deciduous shrubs and small trees. Native to North America, Japan and China, these plants have four species and one hybrid. It got its scientific name Hamamelis from the Greek words hama and mela, which means “together” and “fruit,” respectively. That’s because Witch hazel is one of the few plants that can bear fruits, leaves and flowers at the same time.

It also got its name witch hazel because of its twigs that were used by the English settlers as divining rods. Aside from divining water, some also reportedly used it for diving gold underground. Another interesting feature of the witch hazel is its explosive seed dispersal which shoots seeds as far as 10 meters away.
