Can You Use PayPal on Amazon to Buy Stuff?

A man using the Paypal app on his phone.

Lots of folks have Paypal because it's so easy to buy stuff online. The question is can you use Paypal to buy on Amazon? We dug into this question to find out whether it's possible.

Do you use PayPal for most (or all) of your online purchases? We don’t blame you. The convenience and security of the renowned online payment system are just a few of the reasons it has been used by millions of people since being launched in 1998 (when it was known as X.com).

With that being said, there are some downsides. One of the biggest has to be the fact that online shoppers can’t pay for items using PayPal directly on Amazon. The eCommerce platform is the biggest in the world and is home to over 12 million products.

Chances are, you’ve shopped, or thought of shopping, on Amazon before. While the platform is incredible — offering a vast selection of products (books, movies, clothing, household decor, kitchen appliances, and more) at affordable prices — if you want to use PayPal to buy Amazon products you’re out of luck. Or are you?

In this article, we’ll explore the relationship between the two companies and reveal the workarounds that make using PayPal to purchase Amazon products possible.

Why Doesn’t Amazon Allow You to Use Paypal Directly?

When it comes to why Amazon doesn’t accept PayPal payments directly, there are two main reasons you need to consider:

PayPal Was Once a Part of eBay

From 2002 until 2015, PayPal was a part of eBay; another popular eCommerce platform that directly competes with Amazon. While the two companies have since split, PayPal continues to be something eBay users heavily rely on when it comes to purchasing new and used products on the website.

PayPal is a Direct Competitor to Amazon Pay

Some may not be aware, but Amazon has its own payment service called Amazon Pay. This service is accepted by thousands of third party online retailers, allowing users to shop for products using Amazon payment methods even when they aren’t directly shopping on Amazon.com.

Obviously, this makes PayPal a direct competitor and is a significant reason why Amazon doesn’t accept PayPal payments directly on its site.

The simple answer to the question “can you use PayPal on Amazon” is not directly. But, there are a few indirect workarounds to make paying for Amazon products with PayPal possible. Let’s explore them below:

How Can You Use PayPal on Amazon?

The simple answer to the question “can you use PayPal on Amazon” is no. But, there are a few workarounds to make paying for Amazon products indirectly with PayPal possible. Let’s explore them below:

A close look at a PayPal debit cash card.

1. PayPal Cash Card

By signing up for a PayPal Cash Card — which essentially works similarly to any other major credit or debit card you would use on Amazon — you can successfully use PayPal to pay for products on Amazon.

Why this works is due to the fact that Amazon simply won’t know the difference between your PayPal Cash Card and a regular debit/credit card. The benefits you typically get when using PayPal still apply though. Instead of funds being taken from your bank account, they’ll be deducted from your PayPal account.

Here are a few additional reasons why you should consider a PayPal Cash Card:

  • PayPal doesn’t check your credit in order for you to be able to receive the card
  • Funds will be deducted from your PayPal account, without the need for a bank account
  • You can have your employer (or anyone else) deposit checks directly into your PayPal account, as you’ll receive a routing and account number upon signing up for the Cash Card
  • The PayPal Cash Card can be used to buy products from any merchant (including and outside of Amazon) that accepts Mastercard
  • It costs nothing to sign up for a PayPal Cash Card

There is one major drawback to keep in mind before getting a PayPal Cash Card. When you sign up, you’ll also need to apply for an account with PayPal Cash Plus. While you don’t need to pay anything extra for this, you will need to verify your identity by providing your:

  • Full name
  • Address
  • Birthday
  • TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number)

Once approved, your PayPal Cash Plus account will then be directly linked to your personal PayPal account to be used to fund all of the purchases you make with the Cash Plus Card.

How to Add a PayPal Cash Card to Your Amazon Account

Adding a PayPal Cash Card to your Amazon account, to be used as a payment option, is a very quick and straightforward process. We’ll break it down below:

  1. First, sign in to your Amazon account, find ‘Account & Lists’ in the menu, and hover over it. Then click on ‘Your Account’.
  2. Find the ‘Ordering and shopping preferences’ box and select ‘Your Payments’. Scroll down and click ‘Add a credit or debit card’.
  3. Enter your PayPal Cash Card details (card number, name on card, expiration date) in the fields that appear and click the ‘Add your card’ button. You can also opt to make this your default payment method for all Amazon purchases.

Your PayPal Cash Card should now be listed under ‘Your credit and debit cards’. This means you’ll be able to use it as a payment option whenever you purchase something on Amazon!

2. PayPal Mastercard

While a PayPal Cash Card works much like a traditional credit card, the PayPal Mastercard actually IS a credit card. The card itself isn’t actually issued by PayPal, but by Synchrony Bank, and requires a credit check before you can be approved.

There’s no denying this is a significant drawback to using a PayPal Mastercard, but the benefit is you can use it to buy products on Amazon. It’s also accepted by any retailer (online or brick and mortar) that accepts either Mastercard or PayPal as a payment method, just like the PayPal Cash Card.

Before signing up for a PayPal Mastercard you should be aware, there are two types:

  1. The Cashback Mastercard allows you to earn 2% cash rewards when making specific qualified purchases. This cash can then be transferred to your main PayPal account to be used later.
  2. The Extras Mastercard allows you to earn points when making purchases that qualify and allows you to use these points at select merchants found on the PayPal Extras Reward Redemption Servicing website.

When it comes to approval, as long as your credit is in good standing you should be approved quickly. Here are a few additional reasons why you should sign up for a PayPal Mastercard:

  • You have the freedom and flexibility of paying your PayPal Mastercard balance with your bank account or PayPal account.
  • Because it’s a credit card, you will build your credit score the more you use it.
  • You’ll be able to use your PayPal Mastercard when making purchases on Amazon!

It’s important to keep in mind, the PayPal Mastercard isn’t for everyone. You should consider all of the factors associated with using a credit card to figure out if signing up for one is right for you.

If you do choose to sign up for a PayPal Mastercard, adding it to your Amazon account is the same process as adding a PayPal Cash Card.

3. Amazon Gift Cards

Did you know, there are dozens of online vendors that offer Amazon gift cards and allow you to pay for those gift cards using PayPal? While this is a nifty workaround to using PayPal for Amazon purchases, it does add an additional step to the process, as you’ll need to purchase the gift cards beforehand.

The good part is, by purchasing gift cards through vendors like eGifter.com, you’ll receive a digital code immediately; allowing you to quickly start shopping for Amazon products.

We recommend using caution, though, when buying any gift cards online. Make sure the sites you’re getting your gift cards from are safe and secure, as there are a lot of scam sites out there. To save you some time, here are our picks for the best online vendors that offer Amazon gift cards and allow you to use PayPal to purchase them:

4. Transfer PayPal Funds to Your Bank Account

If you’re not comfortable trying out the other options on this list — because you don’t want to sign up for a prepaid card/credit card, or you don’t want to purchase a gift card — then there is one final workaround to using PayPal for Amazon purchases. You’ll simply need to transfer the money that’s in your PayPal account to your bank account.

Keep in mind, this process can be tedious and take up to 10 days when doing it for free. You’ll also need to have your bank account linked to your PayPal account first.

If you don’t mind paying a small fee, though, and your bank account is already linked, you can perform an instant transfer directly from PayPal to either your bank account (checking or savings) or your debit card.

This will allow your funds to instantly become available for use on anything you’d like, including products on Amazon.

We hope we’ve helped you understand how you can still use PayPal on Amazon, even though PayPal isn’t accepted directly. If you know of any additional loopholes, we’d love it if you could share them in the comments.
